Sustainable Farming for Community Development
Eco-Agriculture partners strive for a community where rural livelihoods, nature, and food security are equally valued, and where the communities have a larger role in managing the natural resources they rely on. We work with community groups and farmers to manage farmland in ways that benefit biodiversity as well as food production.
We help them to learn about crops that will nurture the soil and provide nutritional benefits, and also about land-clearing methods that leave trees and bushes in place as wildlife habitat.

Revolutionary space-saving farming technology - Grow more food in less space, using less water, with higher yields. Perfect for Mfangano Island where arable land is limited.
Grow 10x more in the same footprint - perfect for small homesteads
Drip irrigation systems recycle water efficiently
Better sunlight exposure and air circulation = healthier plants
Elevated growing reduces ground pests and diseases
No more bending - harvest at waist/chest level
Year-round production = consistent income stream
Use wooden poles, PVC pipes, or repurposed barrels to create a 6-8 foot tall frame.
Create planting holes at 12-inch intervals or attach pots/nursery bags to the frame.
Install a drip line or PVC pipe with small holes for even water distribution.
Fill with organic soil mixed with compost and manure for rich nutrients.
Plant seedlings, water from the top, and watch gravity do the work!
๐ก Did You Know? A 4x6 foot vertical garden can produce the same amount of vegetables as a 20x20 foot traditional garden! This is a game-changer for Mfangano Island families with limited land.
Each vertical garden produces fresh vegetables year-round, saving families $30-50 per month on food costs and generating income through surplus sales.
SAGREMA Foundation is training 50 families on vertical gardening techniques. We provide materials, seeds, and ongoing technical support. Each trained family will mentor 5 others, creating a ripple effect of food security and economic empowerment across the island.
Most community members dwell on poultry, goat and cattle keeping as one way of improving their lives through getting food and a little income for their upkeep and educating their children. Poultry farming is an enterprise that can be done with low requirements on time and land.
The foundation is developing several organic poultry units on farms belonging to foundation members in order to increase their standards of living.
Goat keeping provides sustainable income and food security for community families while requiring minimal land and resources.
Cattle farming provides milk, meat, and income opportunities for larger community families with appropriate land resources.
Most of our youths depend on fishing activities as their major means of getting bread on the table and improving their way of life. They should be supported and strengthened financially to build them economically for self-reliance and sustainability by giving them the required gears to support their activities.
Economic empowerment of the community is one of the Foundation's primary functions. A project is currently underway to establish floating fish cages in Lake Victoria for sustainable aquaculture. This project helps to create employment opportunities, promote sustainable farming in the region and also boost the incomes of community members.
We are also planning to support registered groups of fishermen, by giving them revolving funds through micro-finance initiatives allowing them to buy needed fishing gear.
Sustainable aquaculture infrastructure for long-term community development and employment creation.
